death of tribe.net

topic posted Fri, June 23, 2006 - 11:21 AM by
It's obvious that tribe.net is going to fold at any moment. A few warning signs for you:

1. The big banner billboard on the side of the tribe.net office building has been taken down.

2. Text ads are not even working in my browser at the moment.

3. Tribe.net employees and executives have been quitting.

4. Tribe.net is still not profitable after three solid years. (Launch date was July 21, 2003.)

So what are we going to do when they pull the plug?

      good answer Sparkle.

I don't know what I would do, unfortunately my social life is pretty tied up in tribey stuff. I would miss it certainly though it would probably free up hours and hours of time in my day.

Tribe is a time robber. I lovely wicked time robber.

It's been pretty easy for me to wean myself from tribe.net somewhat... activity has been so low, at least in the forums I haunt.

I didn't like the way Free Ass was presented, I was in a few tribes where I felt like I was being lured to a cult or something. Insert funny paradox about the Tribe cult here....

              Join us...it's bliss.

Well, actually, it's kinda boring, with ocassional glimpses of what Tribe used to be like. Sort of like a high school reunion.

                I'd definitely miss tribe.net... :(

Well as if they weren't WARNED!!!...I feel bad...if they're really gonna fold.

Free-Association...their UI...isn't there yet...it does have promise...just it's not tribe..and so far..no real connections made from it offline (most of everyone on free-ass I"m connected to I know from tribe)...

                We could always invade google/yahoogroups...

But it wouldn't be the same...

it would probably be good for me to wean myself off of it, as checking in is sort of compulsive. I mean, what if I missed a non sequitor or something? I might lose my mind.

We upload our personnaes to the net, thereby ensuring that we will live forever. I hear that all you need are USB cables.

Hey, where *is* Tribe headquarters? I think my fantasy would be to have the old owners buy Tribe from the new owners who obviously ran this thing right into the ground. Sad, being as I find it particularly useful at the moment. Ah, well, there's always usenet. If only creating groups there wasn't such a pain.

"If only creating groups there wasn't such a pain."

First, there are over 40,000 Usenet newsgroups covering every conceivable topic. Second, it's good to have at least some control over new groups if they're going to be carried by news servers around the world. Otherwise there'd be a million newsgroups, most of them with no traffic.

They're in San Francisco... the old owners/founders of tribe (mark P) founded something else -- typepad I think..he's into the blogging stuff nowadays

"So what are we going to do when they pull the plug?"

This is why I suggested Usenet many months ago. Usenet is the only thing that is like Tribe when it comes to discussions, but is not owned by anyone (so it won't suddenly go away). People who want more info can Google "Usenet" (or visit Wikipedia) and start exploring the Usenet universe.

The generic nature of Usenet combined with the stodgy no-new-groups climate makes it a terrible place for me to be. It's like being in the waiting room at the dentist - I don't want to be there, and I don't like what I'm waiting for.

No form bland catch-all discussion group is going to speak to my individuality and need for amiable contact with other intelligent freaks. Tribe had a very special verve in its heyday, but the guy "Jan" killed it. It might have become a platform for social evolution, even - but someone actually thought they needed to invite the soccer moms and normal-singles action. VERY stupid.

If free-ass had attracted more of the spirited folks, it would have been the place to go but.... nobody seems to want to play there, as much.

      I'll miss you all. :(

i despise myspace and i just clicked on your platial link, dear madame, but it looked like a glorified frappr, no? i'd be willing to check out free association, but doesn't everyone have live journal already anyway? we can just re-invent our tribes there as groups - what is your criticism of live journal (it's not user-friendly like tribe, but what can we do?)
        • Re: death of tribe.net

          Sat, June 24, 2006 - 3:29 PM
Not everyone is on LiveJournal. I'm not. But you're right, LiveJournal might be a better alternative than myspace, which of course is incredibly painful to look at. Live Journal isn't much better, what with all the annoying smiley icons and crap.

I'm willing to give free-association a chance when tribe kicks the bucket. Perhaps if there is sufficient membership, a viable feature set will emerge. But until then I do not have time to start a presence on another online community.

It's just one of those things, maing. There's a guy in Atlanta that used to hate my guts, for like seven years we were enemies; now when we see each other we're like "hey man" because, jesus fuck, we've known each other since 198fuckin8. We're brothers, now.

              Hold me.
