Marcel Proust’s questionnaire is one of the best-known interview devices used in the media nowadays. Fun, intelligent, and concise, it reveals much of the personality of those questioned. The Maison Darel has recently purchased the original Marcel Proust questionnaire, and Assouline Publishing has produced a facsimile edition that contains Marcel Proust’s handwritten replies. An introduction by Henry-Jean Servat, a long-standing member of the Friends of Marcel Proust Society, provides a historical account of the questionnaire, and a foreword by William C. Carter describes the significance of Proust today. In addition to the facsimile with Proust's answers, the book includes questionnaires completed by people with a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, including Peter Lindbergh, Marisa Berenson, and Richard Meier.

You wish for us to post our answers here?

This is the one they use for a small bit in Vanity Fair. What a great idea. But it does require some contemplation.

                not understanding solitude

                  Granny

Through every nook and every cranny
The wind blew in on poor old Granny
Around her knees, into each ear
(And up nose as well, I fear)

All through the night the wind grew worse
It nearly made the vicar curse
The top had fallen off the steeple
Just missing him (and other people)

It blew on man, it blew on beast
It blew on nun, it blew on priest
It blew the wig off Auntie Fanny-
But most of all, it blew on Granny!

Who else here is deeply skeptical of the alleged "wisdom of the crowd"? I mean, I think Wikipedia is a pretty cool phenomenon, despite its faults. But really, the crowd is often less than the sum of its parts. Just look around. We live in an over-industrialized, polluted, unjust world. And who do we have to blame? No one in particular, just everyone in general.

                >>I ham stilll tryings tou find ze elusive "hortense carruthers" though..<<

She was an anti-tobacco activist in the seventies and now lives a reclusive life, only popping out a new thing every so often. She writes under the pseudonym to distance herself from the fans of her early work and to actually *reduce* her own readership. As far as I know I'm one of approximately 5 people who have ever seen any MS by her longer than a short story, and it's a fucking shame, because she's brilliant -

just crackers, is all. It's my fervent hope that her works find a publisher willing to put up with her idiosyncrasies before she dies, but I've learned that those kind of hopes are often best enjoyed as treasured keepsakes. Smart people that read books are a vanishing market.

I'll see if I can get a release and post something of hers, if you like. It's a hassle, but it's worth it. I can't think of anyone else writing today in the *perfect* and *amazing* English she uses. Like many other great minds before, the very mark of her genius has also damned her to obscurity.

She 100% believes that she's being stalked by tobacco-agents. I mention this to underscore that she is very paranoid and timid about the world of publishing. When the whole Rushdie thing went down she took it as deadly affirmation, according to a mutual friend (that being how I know of her at all).

In other news, JJ Pierce used to be active on tribe.net under a pseudonym. Anyone else know who that is?

    this looks like fun 8-]

    Q: Your most marked characteristic?
A: that depends on who's doing the looking. to some people my most marked characteristic might be the volume of my writing. others might be most stuck by the apparent surface dissonance between my intellect and my obsessive focus. but for most people it's probably my transsexuality.

Q: The quality you most like in a man?
A: just one? bugger that for a game of soldiers. honesty is very important. so is passion. a nice set of shoulders is a bonus

Q: The quality you most like in a woman?
    A:intellect, honesty and passion.

Q: What do you most value in your friends?
    A: acceptance

Q: What is your principle defect?
A: my ginormous and multifaceted vanity

Q: What is your favorite occupation?
A: the favorite one i've ever had, the one i'd most like or the one i enjoy observing the most? the one i enjoyed doing the most by far was running the show at direct advantage marketing. it was a mid-sized telefundraising firm for the institutional left when i got there, and by the time i'd been a director there for a year it was a total juggernaut. we tripled in size and raised more money for the kerry for president campaign in the first weekend than every other call center in the country combined. what i'd really like to do, though, is write for a living. i don't even really care that much what i'm writing About. i think i must just like the sound of my fingers typing of something :/ my favorite career to observe would be Superhero.

Q: What is your dream of happiness?
    A:

    ...damn...

you know, i think i'm already in it. if i'd been asked this three years ago i would have said to transition from male to female and make it work somehow. i also wouldn't have believed it was possible for me to do. there's only one more thing that would make me happier. there's, um, you know, This Guy. we met a little over a year ago on another website. brilliant, beautiful and talented like nobody i'd imagined. ever. the chemistry was... Immediate. intense, too. we consider ourselves involved with each other, but we've never actually been on the same side of the mississippi at the same time :( in my experience, money is something that happens to other people and he's an artist - i wouldn't have him do anything other than what he does, but he's all the way in los effing angeles. what i want most is to find a way to be out there with him, permanently. but i'd settle for a weekend.

Q: What to your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes?
A: humanity's depredations making the earth unfit for incarnating consciousness.

Q: What would you like to be?
    A: me

Q: In what country would you like to live?
A: this one. the united states. i still believe (against all evidence, i know) that the republic can be salvaged.

Q: What is your favorite color?
    A: pale purple

Q: What is your favorite flower?
A: i like the snowdrop. it always manages to be first.

Q: What is your favorite bird?
A: that's really hard... i like birds a lot. i guess my favorite one is this odd grey bird that lives at the national aviary near me. it looks like a fuzzy sphere on sticks and it has kind of a long beak. when i go there it always comes up to me and tries to eat the cuffs of my jeans.

Q: Who are your favorite prose writers?
A: henry miller is my favorite dead author. my favorite living author is rockstar

Q: Who are your favorite poets?
    A: longfellow and rumi

Q: Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
A: elric, from michael moorcock's books.

Q: Who are your favorite heroines of fiction?
A: harriet the spy!!! hah i liked ramona, too. and catwoman and wonder woman. and bitchy bitch from naughty bits. hothead paisan is really good, too.

Q: Who are your favorite composers?
A: trey anastasio, frank zappa, modest mussorgski, stravinski

Q: Who are your favorite painters?
A: goya, dali and gustave klint.

Q: Who are your heroes in real life?
A: mother jones, stephanie tubbs jones, nikolai tesla, buckminster fuller

Q: What is it you most dislike?
A: i don't like watching people be mean to each other on television

Q: What natural gift would you most like to possess?
    A: eternal youth

Q: How would you like to die?
A: bugger that. i want to translate myself into pure energy. if i HAVE to die, though, i'd like to die before i know what hit me.

Q: What is your present state of mind?
    A: amused, silghtly buzzed

Q: To what faults do you feel most indulgent?
A: hmmm... i guess that depends on what's meant by Fault. with my own faults, i'm most tolerant of my occasional laziness.

    Q: What is your motto?
A: lux in homine factum - from man into light

Q: What would aryoooo consider tou be ze depth ov misery?
A: if i had to go back to living as a guy. i'd much rather be eaten by spiders or something.

Q: What event in military history do you most admire?
A: the john brown revolt! hell yeah!

Q: What are your favorite names?
A: i like welsh, cornish and irish names. maeve, bronwyn, anything from the mabinogion... they almost all sound beautiful to me. our modern english names are brutish and barbaric in comparision.

Q: What historical figures do you most despise?
A: hmmm... in recent history it's been just about every republican in the executive branch starting with reagan through today. farther back... i don't think much of alexander the great, frankly. what an utter bastard! i'm no fan of hitler's crowd, or anybody who invades other people's homes on whatever scale, personal or international, either.

Q: If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be?
A: my brother. he'd be in academia rather than naval effing intelligence

          ............?!? ho-lee
          • I suspect it was a pot fueled idea or something. I think when two of our cats had kittens within days of each other and we had 21 kittens for awhile I think she just lost it. :( I loved those kitties, the mommies would trade kittens in the middle of the night, one by one they would walk their kittens over to the other mommies bed. I can imagine as a parent that would have been overwhelming but I would never never never have done that.

Bless her heart, there were quite a few disconnects in the connecting with people and other sentient beings part for dear mommy.

It is weird how often we feel like our parents parents even when we are little.
        • *Do you know who Proust is?

*How many key grips do you think would be involved?

i do Not. i do, however, avoid all intoxicants that come in powder or pill form. gel-tabs are on a case-by-case basis.

*How did your childhood pet die?

my childhood pet was a crayfish i found in the rapidly-drying pinegrove steam, a small tributary of which ran behind my house. i kept him in his own special bucket, going down to the creek myself every few days to bring him back plants and bugs and mayfly nymphs. he lived in that bucket for two years before he died of old age.

      • *Do you know who Proust is? Explain.
--- yes, Icky reads him on the toilet

(that's all I have to say about that)
        • Unsu...

Bugger it, I actually spent quite some time coming up with answers to the first set of questions, but these are more fun. Here goes:

*Do you know who Proust is? Explain.
Whenever I think of Proust I think of Roald Dahl’s ‘My Uncle Oswald’, where the delectable Jasmine makes off with Proust’s sperm by pretending to be a young man.

          *What was your childhood nickname?
Peenee. I’m not quite sure why

*What actor would play you in the movie of your life?
I used to be told by slightly inebriated aspiring Lotharios that I look like Jodie Foster. I think it’s the pointy nose and the complete absence of a discernible tan. I think playing me would be less of a stretch for someone like Drew Barrymore

*What would your movie's theme song be?
Moloko’s A Drop in the Ocean – it’s full of trite cliches strung together in a nonsensical manner, and Roisin would probably be entertaining at the movie’s premiere.

*How many key grips do you think would be involved?
          As many as it takes

*Do you say "soda" or "pop"?
          Soft-drink, actually

          *Paper or plastic?
          Paper

*What form of alcohol do you avoid at all costs?
          Cheap sweet white wine. Yuk.

*How did your childhood pet die?
I like to think our backyard was littered with the corpses of pets who died of old age, but I’d be lying to myself. The last pet to die had a tumor and died during surgery. I really miss the grumpy old bugger.

          *What's your guiltiest musical pleasure?
I’m a cheesy pop addict, and proud of it. Yes, even Baccarat. And Engelbert. And Gunther. And John Paul Young.

*If you could only say one word for the rest of your life, what would it be?
          Probably

*What three words best describe your adolescent wardrobe?
I had phases. There was a Denise from the Cosby Show phase. There was a Part of Prince's Entourage phase. There was the inevitable Black phase. And then there was a Red phase.

*What commercial catchphrase best sums up your personal philosophy?
It’ll be allright on the night

          *What's your hidden talent?
I can understand Glaswegian taxi drivers.

*What was your most flamboyant failure?
I once wrote on a Phonetics exam paper: ‘rather than waste the time of the examiner, I’ll come back for the resits in September’

          *What time is it?
          23:23

*What world record would you like to hold?
          Something involving travel

*What body part are you most ashamed of?
My thighs could do with some toning, I guess. And you won't catch me wearing a thong bikini.

*What would your personal hell be like?
A world without something to read

*How many times a day do you think of food?
When I’m hungry, or reading something about food

*What do you keep in your glove compartment?
          Gum. Lotion. Map.

*Who is your favorite criminal ever?
Bridget Gregory in The Last Seduction was very, very entertaining

*Where did you get your shoes?
          a flea market

*Do I look fat in this?
I’m not entirely convinced it’s you.

This is too many questions! so I answer every one of 'em all at once: No, yes, maybe, date rape eyes, Juan Fernando, and twice on Sunday if the wind is just right.

The real Proust Questionnaire is tooooo haaaarddd....so I'm gonna go with this one.

*Do you know who Proust is? Explain.
Yes, I studied him extensively in grad school. He was an invalid who wrote very long books.

*What was your childhood nickname? Allie

*What actor would play you in the movie of your life? Hmm...maybe Drew Barrymore. No, she's too old. Scarlett Johannsen, maybe. Yeah, let's go with her. I like her boobies.

*What would your movie's theme song be? Mushaboom by Feist

*How many key grips do you think would be involved? Oh, you only need one. And a best boy. And maybe a third, but that could be too much.

*Do you say "soda" or "pop"? Soda. Duh.

        *Paper or plastic? Boxers.

*What form of alcohol do you avoid at all costs? I really don't avoid any alcohol at all costs, at all. Even rubbing alcohol comes in handy when you've got a scrape.

*How did your childhood pet die? Run over by a car! Every last one of em!

*What's your guiltiest musical pleasure? Justin Timberlake. This just can't be summer love!

*If you could only say one word for the rest of your life, what would it be? Fuck.

*What three words best describe your adolescent wardrobe?
        baggy
        menswear
        unflattering

*What commercial catchphrase best sums up your personal philosophy? Good to the last drop.

*What's your hidden talent? Really great at organizing shit.

*What was your most flamboyant failure? Oh jeez. Several terrible musical performances. I try not to think about them too much.

*What time is it? 12:36 in New York City, 9:36 in the Bay Area

*What world record would you like to hold? most massages received in a row.

*What body part are you most ashamed of? ummm...this question brings up too many issues for me.

*What would your personal hell be like? holding my pee forever. Or having to listen to other people describe the plots of tv shows and movies i haven't seen.

*How many times a day do you think of food? Constantly.

*What do you keep in your glove compartment? Gloves. Duh.

*Who is your favorite criminal ever? Typhoid Mary.

*Where did you get your shoes? Flip flops from Brazil!

*Do I look fat in this? Oh no, sweetie. You look great.
